The Yorkton Terriers are celebrating their 40th anniversary in Junior Hockey. Over the course of the season Yorkton This Week will be providing vignettes looking at the proud heritage of the team through the eyes of those who have stood behind the bench in the past four decades as head coaches of the Terriers. This is the ninth in the series.
What years did you coach in Yorkton?
I coached the Terriers from 2002-2004. While coaching other teams like Melville Millionaires and the Lebret Eagles I knew that Yorkton fans were very supportive and a tough place to play was the Gallagher Centre.
Who was the best Terrier you coached? Why?
Trent Cassan - He was the best Terrier I coached. Why? Because of his work ethic and unselfish style as a player. He was a great team guy. His passion for the game has never left him and that is a big reason he is the top coach in the SJHL right now.
Is there a particular game which stands out in your memory? Explain why that game is memorable.
Game 7 at home against the Weyburn Red Wings being down in the series 3-1 we battled back in Game 6. Mitch Stephens scored late - then Game 7 - being down early I pulled Brett Thomas and put in Todd Veray. We tied it up and Dylan Lowe from Jr. B St. Philips Rangers scored the winner late to take Game 7 at home.
Did you coach after Yorkton? Where?
Two years later I coached the Fort Knox Jr. B who were hosting the Key Stone Cup and got a Silver Medal.
Where do you live today? What do you do?
I live at my ranch south of Yorkton and into my third year as GM of the same loved Terriers.
