The Yorkton Terriers are celebrating their 40th anniversary in Junior Hockey. Over the course of the season Yorkton This Week will be providing vignettes looking at the proud heritage of the team through the eyes of those who have stood behind the bench in the past four decades as head coaches of the Terriers. This is the seventh in the series.

What years did you coach in Yorkton?

As to what year I was involved with the Yorkton Terriers, it is not necessarily engraved into my memories of Yorkton. I have been told by some players that it was about 1979 but you will have to maybe check with some locals that was on the team or executive at the time. I was never really appointed the 'coach' of the Terriers. During fall camp I was only helping the present coach and at the time I was coaching the midgets and running camp drills for him. At the end of the camp they fired the coach and asked me to start the season as interim coach. I consequently coached the team until New Years, when they turned the team over to Jerry Bulitz

Who was the best Terrier you coached? Why?

As to best player, we had as many as four or five who had the talent but lacked some of the desire to make it any further. The one with most desire (in my mind) was a player, Murry Majors, who I understand went on to Boston College.

Is there a particular game which stands out in your memory? Explain why that game is memorable.

The game that still stands out in my mind is a game in December (near the end of my term) against Prince Albert coached by Terry Simpson. The game was end to end and in the last minute of the game they scored to win 1-0.

Did you coach after Yorkton? Where?

After being relieved by the Terriers I went back to Minor Hockey and the following year was assigned the coach of the travelling team in the Pee Wee league. I stayed with these boys up until they were done in Bantam. This team was asked to go to Finland and also travelled to Russia to play some exhibition games. Again it was coached by another fellow who at the time was my assistant coach.

I coached the Canora Rebels for one more year in the senior league. My wife and I were transferred to Calgary the next spring and I did some volunteering with the major midget team in my area but did not take on any more coaching jobs.

Where do you live today? What do you do?

My wife and I are still living in the Calgary area and we are both retired.
