The Yorkton Yorkers are officially the first team outside of Regina and Saskatoon to join the Saskatchewan Cricket Association.
The Yorkers will kick off their rookie season in the league this May. As it stands, all of the team's games are scheduled in Regina because there is no cricket ground in Yorkton.
The team went with the name Yorkers for more reasons than just its catchy ring to it. Yorker is a cricket term for a ball that is bowled into a batsman's feet. It is a difficult ball to handle.
The Yorkers will wear yellow and black uniforms in honour of Yorkton's official flower - the sunflower.
Yorkton will be busy as they are playing in both formats of crick in Saskatchewan: T20 and ODP. In T20 cricket, each team's innings comprises a maximum of 20 overs. An over is six deliveries of the ball by a bowler. In ODP, also known as 40-over cricket, each team bats for a maximum of 40 overs.
Team captain Faisal Anwar is thankful for the community helping make the Yorkton Yorkers an official team.
"We are thankful to Sask Lotteries and the Adjudicated Committee - Community Grant Program as their funding enabled us to continue cricket during the winter season, which resulted in making history to represent Yorkton for the very first time in the Saskatchewan Cricket League this year," he said. "We also appreciate the support of the City's Community Development, Parks & Recreation Department, which assisted us in promoting cricket through family cricket clinics and made Heritage Heights Park available for local cricketers during the past summer. Now we are exploring various options for a cricket pitch in the community."
