The Yorkton Cardinals are looking for roofs over their players’ heads.

The Cardinals’ baseball season kicks off later this month. While the team is putting strategies together and planning their touring schedule, Jackie Sedley is scrambling to make sure the players have somewhere to rest their heads.

Sedley is the billet coordinator for the Yorkton Cardinals. The billet program connects Yorkton families with Cardinals players. Whenever the Cardinals have a home game (24 in total this season), out-of-town players can stay at these billeted homes for the night.

“It’s been going on for years,” Sedley said. “We billet all of our players.”

The billet program provides several benefits for volunteer homes. Families receive a season baseball ticket and $400 per month for each player they host.

The Cardinals begin their season in Moose Jaw on May 31, with their first home game landing on Jun. 2. As those dates draw closer, Sedley is campaiging hard to get players into billeted homes.

“We’re down to the crunch,” she said. “It’s hard to find families to take in players.”

There are seven remaining players without billeted homes. Sedley is encouraging anyone who might be interested in the program to reach out to her.

“It would really help us out,” she said.

Sedley has personally billeted several players at her home. She vouches for the quality of the program.

“It’s a great experience for the families,” she said.

Players will start to arrive in Yorkton in late May. They’re traveling from across Canada and the United States, including Calgary, Prince Edward Island, Florida, and California.

“They’re looking forward to it,” Sedley said.

Anyone interested in the billet program can contact Sedley at 306-621-4589 for more information and to arrange a meet and greet.
