Yes I'm biased on this. But I challenge you to argue with me. Go on, try it. You'll lose. And the reason why you'd lose is simply because you can't argue against fact.
And the fact is, Yorkton, Saskatchewan, is clearly a city of hockey champions. The Yorkton Terriers of the SJHL officially stamped that title with their 4-3 come-from-behind overtime victory in the Royal Bank Cup finals over the Carleton Place Canadians, but had they lost that game the statement would still be true.
Over this past season Yorkton based hockey teams have won a total of four league championships (Atom 'AA' Terriers, Peewee 'AA' Terriers, Bantam 'AA' Terriers and SJHL Yorkton Terriers), five Provincial titles (Peewee 'AA' Terriers, Bantam'A' Terriers, Midget 'A' Terriers, while the Bantam 'AA' Terriers and SJHL Terriers league titles are also Provincial championships).
Add the SJHL Yorkton Terriers two newest trophies, the Western Canada Cup as Western Canada's top Junior 'A' team and the Royal Bank Cup declaring them the best Junior 'A' team in the country (out of 128 teams), as well as the Saskatchewan Winter Games gold medal for Team Parkland Valley (the majority of players came from Yorkton) and you have a total of 12 Provincial and National championships that have come to the city of Yorkton over the past year.
If you include regular season league titles then you have to add another two championships, making the total 14, as the Peewee 'AA' Terriers and SJHL Terriers both dominated their respective leagues throughout the regular season.
That's an unprecedented amount of championships for a larger city such as Regina or Saskatoon (or Toronto), but when you think of how big Yorkton is, it's even more impressive.
And not only have those teams won those championships, they did so in dominating fashion. The Peewee 'AA' Sherring Gold Terriers slaughtered their opposition all season long going 17-2-1 in the regular season and not losing a game in the playoffs or provincials.
The Bantam UCT Terriers finished the regular season with a 25-5-1 record and second overall before running roughshod through their playoff competition (including sweeping the only team ahead of them in the standings, the Prairie Storm, two games to none).
The SJHL's Yorkton Terriers went 37-12-7 in the regular season and then had little to no trouble throughout the SJHL's playoffs. They then stumbled a little bit in both the WCC and RBC tournaments yet still found a way to win.
All of the above is just proof that Yorkton is the 'City of Hockey Champions' in the province known as the 'Heartland of Hockey'.
