Weekend weather was good enough as three Â鶹´«Ã½AV East Senior Baseball League (SESBL) games were played out as scheduled.
On Sunday, the Parkland Padres and the Yorkton Orioles played games at Jubilee Park. On Monday night, weather cooled down for the Yorkton Junior Cardinals to take on the Yorkton Yankees.
With a 6-1 victory, the Yankees claimed top spot in the standings, scoring six unanswered runs.
With the win, the Yankees are now two points up on the Willowbrook Royals. The teams were even heading into Monday night, while the Junior Cardinals slip into a tie for fourth spot along with the Langenburg Indians.
The Orioles, Parkland Padres and Swan River occupy the remaining slots in the league standings. Monday night in Yorkton, head coach Cliff Leschyshyn said he knew the Yankees were going to be good. He said he was pleased with the way they reacted to Yankees' starting pitcher Logan Calanchie.
It would be the Cardinals who would open the scoring when Daryl Case hit an RBI single scoring Scott Sharp to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead. The lead lasted a few innings before the Yankees scored in bunches.
"We only had nine guys," Leschyshyn noted after the game was done.
"The batting is coming along and I'm pleased with the pitching."
He said playing the Yankees would be a test based on their experience, but liked the fact they had a lead for part of it.
"Our guys playing with confidencewe know their (Yankees) strengths and weaknesses."
The loss puts the Cardinal record to 2-4 through the six games they have been able to play; they have a rescheduled date with the Canora Supers from last week's rain cancellation. With the Yankee victory, they remain undefeated at 7-0, one game better than Willowbrook.
