By Jeff SchneberkStaff WriterThe YRHS senior football team made the trip to Weyburn on the weekend and despite a strong effort from several of the players, miscues on two snaps of the ball resulted in nine points on the scoreboard for Weyburn before the game was five minutes old.
Weyburn eventually went on to win by a 20-12 count but Yorkton Regional High School (YRHS) head coach Roby Sharpe said it was not a bad game by his team as they entered week two of Regina Intercollegiate Football League (RIFL) action.
Sharpe said it was the first two plays, back-to-back plays in the opening quarter that put Yorkton behind early. Even though quarterback-turned-tailback Jake Prybylski ran for a touchdown, Sharpe seems to like the usefulness of Prybylski who has shown that he can play more than one role with the team.
And as a precautionary measure, Sharpe brought in current junior team quarterback Mackenzie Shore to help out and distribute the ball.
"Well yeah, it was awesome," Sharpe said Monday following the game. He seemed very pleased with how Shore fit in and how Prybylski moved the ball. He said the latter ran for over 200 yards as his flashes from junior football where he was a tailback, started to surface again.
"He carried that ball like a madman," observed coach Sharpe of Prybylski.
With heavy rains having fallen on Weyburn the morning of the game, Sharpe and company were playing on "sloppy" field conditions and it was a case of the winning team making the fewest mistakes.
Of the two mistakes to open the game, Sharpe said the first bad snap resulted in a safety in Weyburn's favour; the second resulted in the home side running in for a 10-yard touchdown from the Raider 10.
He also pointed out the Weyburn has proven to be the team to beat in the Regina Intercollegiate Football League over the past four years, having won the league title each time.
"Our offence was moving the ball. We put a string of plays together then it ends," comments Sharpe.
"Jake had two good, long runs."
Other standouts on the day went to middle linebacker Dalton Bakke and receiver Christoph Zawatsky, said Sharpe.
The Raiders have been acknowledging the Game Helmet award each game this season. It goes to the player that worked the hardest during that game. Prybylski was the recipient in week two's match.
Sharpe, Prybylski and company are back at it this Saturday afternoon at Century Field when they host O'Neill at 2 p.m.
