Terriers split weekend series with Millionaires

The Yorkton Terriers and the Melville Millionaires had their first two-game series of the regular season in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League last weekend.

The Yorkton Terriers and the Melville Millionaires had their first two-game series of the regular season in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League last weekend.聽

The series started in Melville on Friday night, where the Millionaires dominated the game and took a 5-1 win over the Terriers.聽

There were 1021 fans who filled the Horizon Credit Union Centre for the game. Before puck drop, the Millionaires conducted a ceremony on the ice to pay tribute to the recent Las Vegas shooting, where a member of their extended alumni family sadly lost their life.聽

With that inspiration, the Millionaires were able to come out strong on the ice and take the win over the Terriers.聽

The Millionaires struck first in the first period, and the Terriers responded just two minutes later with a goal from captain Dexter Robinson.聽

But the second and third periods would each see two goals from the Millionaires and none from the Terriers, resulting in the 5-1 final score.聽

On Saturday, the Terriers would have to make some changes in order to see a better outcome. And they did.聽

Saturday鈥檚 game saw the Terriers come out on top, 5-2.聽

In front of 742 fans, the Terriers would score two goals in the first period. The first came from Cody Bruchkowski and the second from Charlie Risk on a power play.聽

In the second period, Melville would score one on a power play in hopes of catching up, but the Terriers made that much harder when they added a third goal just two minutes later. That goal came from William Brochu, which would be his first of two goals that night.聽

Brochu鈥檚 second came in the third period during a power play. The Terriers鈥 fifth and final goal of the night was scored by Mason Mullaney.聽

The Millionaires scored their second goal with two minutes remaining in the game, but that鈥檚 where it ended.聽

It was a must-win for the Terriers, who have been struggling to get into the W column since their first game of the season.聽

After the game, head coach/GM Casey O鈥橞rien said the team played a more inspired game on Saturday.聽

鈥淟ast night, I thought we were flat,鈥 he explained. 鈥淭onight we were very excited to play and very passionate to step up here, and be ready to roll.鈥澛

Quinton Hobbs was also added back into the Terriers鈥 game lineup on Saturday night after a hand injury had taken him out for several games. O鈥橞rien said that acted as a big motivator for the team as well.聽

鈥淚鈥檓 just excited that we were able to get a win tonight,鈥 added the coach.

With Saturday night being a high-scoring game, O鈥橞rien said he鈥檚 hoping it鈥檒l give his team a boost of confidence going into Tuesday night鈥檚 game against Estevan.聽

After the weekend series, the Terriers鈥 record was 2-6-2 to give them six points. That puts them in eleventh place in the league.

The Melfort Mustangs lead the league with 17 points from a 8-1-1 record. Second to them are the Estevan Bruins with 15 points, who the Terriers faced on Tuesday night at the Farrell Agencies Arena. The result was not available at time of print.聽

Current leaders for the Terriers are Shane Sherban, leading the team in points with five at time of print, stemming from three goals and two assists. William Brochu is right behind him with four points from three goals and one assist.聽

The Terriers play on the road in Nipawin next weekend, but will return to the Farrell Agencies Arena on Tuesday, Oct. 17 to host the Nipawin Hawks at 7:30 p.m.
