The Yorkton Terriers split a pair of Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League games on the week.

The Terriers sit fourth in the SJHL's Sherwood Conference with a record of 12-11-0-1 and 25 points, back of first place Weyburn with 35 points, Estevan with 32 and Melville with 31.

Note Dame sits fifth with 19 points, followed by Kindersley with 15.

On Friday night, the Terriers hosted Humboldt at the Farrell Agencies Arena. After a scoreless first period, the Terriers scored three unanswered goals in the second period, on their way to a 4-1 win.

Kyle McLeod, Nathan Murray, and Brent Struble scored in the second for Yorkton.

Riley Paterson scored in the third, while Andrew Herie replied for the Broncos, ruining Kyle Thomson's shut-out bid with 4:07 left in the third. Thomson said after the game the one shot to elude him fooled him. Humboldt was on a partial two-on-one break, and the Terrier netminder said he was expecting a pass.

"He caught me on the glove hand," he said, adding " It would have been nice to have a shut-out."

Still, Thomson was just happy to be back in action after sitting for several games, He said in that time he just tried to stay ready for when his time came.

"When you don't play for a while you just work hard in practice," he said, adding practice becomes more serious because it's the only action you are seeing.

While the goaltender tends to get credit for a one-goal effort, Thomson said the whole team in front of him "played pretty good tonight," as they blocked shots and cleared rebounds. " I thought the 'D' played really good tonight."

Terrier Assistant Coach Casey O'Brien said the win was not so surprising since the Terriers have played Humboldt well this season winning 4-2 in the Broncos barn then losing by one goal in Yorkton after having a 3-1 lead midway through the game.

The Bronco comeback in the early game was a lesson the Terriers built on Friday, playing more offensively hungry from start to finish.

It helped too getting the lead again, said O'Brien.

"Tonight we got a couple of ugly goals," and that helped set the trend of the game, he said.

One goal which was not ugly was Paterson's goal on a nifty move close in.

"We're starting to see Riley take it to the next level for us," offered O'Brien.

The Terriers did have a new face in the line-up with Taylor Thompson returning from the Western Hockey League. O'Brien said it will take him a few days to get into the flow of the SJHL game, but he will be an asset for the team adding they just want him "to play a two-way game for us."

Tuesday loss

The Terriers were in Weyburn last Tuesday (Nov. 15), where the Red Wings rode a 29-shot shut-out by Mitch Kilgore to a 4-0 victory.

Taylor Balog, Jens Johnson and Jesse Ross with a pair, including an empty-netter, scored for Weyburn.

Warren Shymko was in the Terrier nets facing 25-shots.

In spite of the loss, O'Brien said the Terriers actually played pretty well.

"We came out the first period and had a really good period." he said, adding they had some powerplay chances which Kilgore made big saves on, and that seemed to give the Red Wings the momentum they carried throughout the rest of the game. " He (Kilgore) was the difference that night."

Up next

The Terrier have three games scheduled this week.

Tonight (Wednesday) they host Kindersley at the Farrell Agencies Arena, then head to Melville for action Friday before the Millionaires pay a return visit to the Terriers' barn Saturday.
