It took two weekends in two different cities with two bouts of beautiful weather, but in the end, it was Jack Talsma of Fort Qu’Appelle who won the right to represent the Parkland region in Watrous in May in one of disc golf’s newest and biggest events.

Fifteen competitors from as far away as The Pas, Manitoba were vying for a spot in the provincial bracket of the United States Amateur Match Play Championship put on by disc golf manufacturer Dynamic Discs.

After easing into Saturday’s final four at Melville Regional Park with two stellar rounds in Yorkton the week previous, Talsma, who won the Parkland Association of Disc Golf Championship in 2016, continued to roll, posting a semi-final win over Mark Kienle of Wadena, SK, who finished third.

Talsma’s final opponent was veteran disc golfer Sam Meggs. Meggs, who hails from The Pas, battled back and forth with Talsma, but the Fort Qu’Appelle golfer turned the tide on hole seven-of eight-18.

He parked his disc right beside the target tonal with a very precise forehand drive, and made the short birdie putt. Meggs couldn’t convert his very long birdie attempt, and Talsma took a lead he wouldn’t again relinquish, winning 4 and 2.

Talsma won the opportunity to face three other regional bracket winners in the provincial finals bracket which takes place just outside of Watrous at Murray Disc Golf on Sunday, May 27. He will face winning golfers from brackets in The Battlefords, Saskatoon, and Regina for a chance to represent Saskatchewan at the championship event in Emporia, KS. in June.

Tournament director, Duncan Holness, said of Talsma’s chances that “he has all the skills necessary to throw with the best in the province. Jack is a guy who doesn’t lose very often, and the boys from the rest of the province will have to be on their game to beat him.â€

The PADG tournament season is also set to begin with the first stop on the tour being at Katepwa Provincial Park, Saturday, May 12, and then on

Sunday, May 20 action switches to Fort Qu’Appelle.
