Canora foursome continues winning ways
Bob Kolodziejski’s Canora rink won its fifth game in six Duck Mountain Super League curling outings on home ice in Canora on December 12. From left, are: Kolodziejski (skip), John Zbitniff (third), Terry Wilson (second) and Sean Kolodziejski (lead).

All eight men’s curling teams in the Duck Mountain Super League (DMSL) played on very keen ice on December 12 in Canora.

The host team, skipped by Bob Kolodziejski and sponsored by Pioneer Hi-Bred Seeds, posted a series of one-enders to defeat the Chris Leis foursome of Kamsack. Kolodziejski, curling with John Zbitniff, third; Terry Wilson, second, and Sean Kolodziejski, lead, improved his record to four wins and one loss.

Kamsack’s Fred Perepiolkin, sponsored by Nykolaishen Farms, was in top form against the previously undefeated Rick Kinaschuk team of Benito, backed by W.F. Schneider and Son. Perepiolkin, along with Glen Becenko, third; Nolan Nykolaishen, second, and Mark Warriner, lead, took an early lead and walked away with their third win of the season after six ends.

The Don Bowes team, skipped by Jim Wright of Kamsack and sponsored by Cottenie & Gardner Inc., had a very close game with Brad Knutson of Norquay. Tied 6-6 coming home, Wright’s team of Dave Placatka, third; Ed Guenther, second, and Tom Jordens, lead, was able to outdraw the opposition and save Wright the trouble of throwing his last rock.  The victory gave Bowes three wins and two losses.

The fourth game in Canora was a high-scoring contest between Ken Newell of Norquay, sponsored by Challoner Farm, and Richard Jordens of Madge Lake, skipped by Scott Tulloch and backed by Pattison Agriculture. Tulloch’s team was up 6-0 after two ends but faltered, allowing Newell to lead 7-6 after six ends. Tulloch picked up three points in end No. 7, but Newell responded with two in the next frame, forcing an extra end. The Madge Lake skip played and made a draw shot with his final stone to claim the win.

After five draws, Rick Kinaschuk of Benito and Bob Kolodziejski of Canora are tied for first place with four wins and one loss each. Richard Jordens, Fred Perepiolkin, Don Bowes and Brad Knutson are locked in second place with three wins and two defeats. Chris Leis and Ken Newell, both winless, are sharing space in the Duck Mountain Super League’s basement.

The travelling DMSL bonspiel was to move to Benito on December 19 when Richard Jordens was to be up against Bob Kolodziejski, Newell was to face Perepiolkin, Bowes was to take on Leis, and Kinaschuk was to have played Knutson.

The seventh draw is to take place January 2 in Norquay at 7 and 9 p.m.

DMSL semi-finals and finals are scheduled for January 5 at the Broda Sportsplex in Kamsack. The games are to begin at 6:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome and admission is free.
