Sturgis skaters showcased at ice carnival

The 66th annual Sturgis ice carnival featured the Sturgis Figure Skating Club and its achievements throughout the year. The carnival showcased the theme, Olympic Dreams at the Sturgis Skating Arena on March 3.

The 66th annual Sturgis ice carnival featured the Sturgis Figure Skating Club and its achievements throughout the year.

The carnival showcased the theme, Olympic Dreams at the Sturgis Skating Arena on March 3.

Hockey games were featured throughout the weekend with IP, novice, and atom hockey teams in action.

Heather Jaeb was head coach and had the responsibility of coaching all stages of skaters throughout the year. Allyson Grywacheski was the mistress of ceremonies for the evening. Karlie Kowalchuk was responsible for the music and Andrew Wasylenchuk was responsible for editing and creating the music.

Shawna Johnson, president of the Sturgis Figure Skating Club welcomed everyone and acknowledged all volunteers who helped make the carnival a success.

O Canada and a figure skating prayer kicked off the evening performances.

First on the ice were senior star skaters, who skated toSmash Mouth. Anna Hort, Cheyenne Peterson, Savannah Olson, Natalie Gregory, Jainylle Gagnon, Mollie Jaeb, Bailey Peterson, Shanae Olson and Kylie Babiuk were the featured skaters.

Next on the ice were stage two girls Tera Nelson-Remenda, Gemma Rudachyk, Maycee Johnson and Lindy Romanchuk, who skated to Brave.

Stage three skaters Zaiden Rudachyk, Eva Romanchuk and Karter Johnson, performed to I'm Still Standing.

Stage five skaters Nevaeh Rudachyk, Connor Borus, Allie Babiuk, Brea Babiarz, Chloe Jansen and Makayla Johnson performed to Don't You Forget About Me.

Kylie Babiuk and Mollie Jaeb skated a duet star skate performanceto Stronger.

Stage four skaters Morgan Olson, Avery Masley, Levi Coleman, Rylee Coleman, Savannah Neilson and Riley Wiwcharuk performed to Heroes.

Stage six skaters Tannis Fullawka, Karley Buchinski, Avery Masley, Myrandah Gagnon, Peyton Fullawka, Ripley Pristie, Emma Olson, Layla Jaeb and Amrie Seerey performed two skates to We Are Stars and Dreams.

Stage one girls Arianna Neilson and Lakyn Seerey skated to The Climb.

Shanae Olson skated a senior bronze and junior silver performance to Livin' On a Prayer.

Stage two boys Austin Jansen and Jaxon Neilson skated to We Are the Champions.

Koy Babiuk, stage one boy, performed a solo to Eye of the Tiger. He was accompanied by his sister Kylie Babiuk.

Stage five girls Nevaeh Rudachyk, Allie Babiuk, Brea Babiarz, Chloe Jansen and Makayla Johnson performed to Survivor.

Stage two skaters Austin Jansen, Jaxon Neilson, Tera Nelson-Remenda, Gemma Rudachyk, Maycee Johnson and Lindy Romanchuk performed to Simply the Best.

Bailey Peterson, Cheyenne Peterson and Anna Hort skated a star skate performance to the Fight Song.

Stage four girls, Morgan Olson, Avery Masley, Rylee Coleman, Savannah Neilson and Riley Wiwcharuk, performed to Fighter.

Stage three boys, Zaiden Rudachyk and Karter Johnson performed a duet to Champion.

Stage one skaters, Arianna Neilson, Koy Babiuk and Lakyn Seerey performed to,I Believe.

Eva Romanchuk, stage three skater performed to Try Everything.

Natalie Gregory, Savannah Olson and Jainylle Gagnon performed a star skate to a Girl on Fire.

Stage four and five boys Connor Borus and Levi Coleman performed to I Won't Back Down.

At intermission, Allie Babiuk was crowned the carnival queen. Ripley Pristie was the reigning queen. Karley Buchinski and Kacie Meroniuk were crowned princesses.

The ice carnival portion concluded with a grand finale by all skaters.

The next day concluded the weekend with a pancake breakfast and skate races.
