The Yorkton Regional High School senior girls Raiders basketball team edged the Sacred Heart High School senior girls Saints in their four-team tournament this past weekend, going undefeated with a 3-0 record.
After both squads went 2-0 in the round-robin tourney, the Raiders and Saints squared off in the Regional on Saturday. The match was close, ending in a 58-45 Raiders victory.
The win was especially sweet for the Raiders with them losing to the Saints in a tourney the weekend before.
"This is the second time we have played them in two weeks," says Raiders head coach Tony Hayden. "They beat us by six in a Melville tournament last weekend. We were prepared for them and I think the key to the game was that we got off to an early start."
Hayden went on to note he made a game-plan change against Sacred Heart the second time around.
"We went to a half-court trap, normally we like to do man-on-man," he says. "I thought it worked well and generated a lot of turnovers."
Saints head coach Chris Hansen felt his squad's slow start out of the gate sealed their fate.
"We couldn't buy a bucket, especially in the first quarter," he says. "We played behind all of the way. We battled back near the end, but we weren't able to get the win."
Prior to their rival Gladstone battle, the Raiders and Saints won their first two games quite comfortably.
The Raiders beat Norquay 52-35 in their first contest on Friday, followed by defeating Fort QuApple 79-5 on Saturday.
The Saints topped Fort QuApple 65-26 on their Friday match and edged Norquay 56-37 on Saturday.
