For one weekend the Farrell Agencies Arena was void of the physicality and brutish behaviour that is a hockey game.
Instead, in its place was the tranquil beauty and graceful skating of over 120 figure skaters representing 16 communities from two different regions, one and six, all participating in the competition with two goals. To win a medal, but more importantly to improve their skating abilities and make themselves better.
Skate Yorkton's skaters did just that, with many skaters leaving the ice surface after a personal best performance in either the Single's Free Skate or Single's Dance competitions.
Skate Yorkton's skaters also saw success in the form of medals. 29 members of the host skating club found the podium in some way with seven skaters winning gold, 13 taking silver and nine taking home bronze.
"I'm really proud of all of our girls," said head skating coach and administrator for Skate Yorkton, Susan Nagy. "For them to do so well, as a coach it really feels good."
Nagy also mentioned how great it was to see all the volunteers, some of which had daughters skating, others who were previously involved with Skate Yorkton, work together to make sure the competition was a complete success. "I can't thank our volunteers enough for what they've done this weekend," offered Nagy, continuing, "The parents of the skaters had to volunteer three hours of their time due to the length of the competition and they did so without complaining.
"We're also very lucky to have some former members that were involved in our club volunteer their time and energy to help us out and give back to the program despite having already graduated from it."
Request for boys
While this competition was strictly for female solo skaters, Nagy mentioned that in other competitions held throughout the province there are boys solo skaters as well as mixed pairs.
However, Skate Yorkton cannot compete in any areas of the competition where males are needed simply due to the fact that no boys are members of the club.
So if any male is interested in figure skating they can contact Skate Yorkton via email at [email protected] or visit their website at www.skateyorkton.com.
