The Sacred Heart High School Saints senior boys basketball team is moving on to regionals in Shaunavon after dominating their 3A conference tournament this past weekend.
"I was happy with how everything went," said Saints head coach Garret Karcha. "The whole team contributed and some guys really stepped up."
The Saints kicked off the Sacred Heart-based tournament with a 73-21 shellacking over Wynyard on Saturday morning.
"The game went well against Wynyard," said Karcha. "We were able to get everyone playing time and that's a good thing on a playoff weekend. But going in we didn't know much about their team, just that they only played two tournaments all year."
The Saints' Carter MacKay matched Wynyard's total point total with 21 on the game.
"He had a good game," said Karcha on MacKay. "He was strong on scoring transitions and stood out for us."
Despite being without leading scorer Brendon Walkington because of a knee injury in their second game against Fort Qu'Appelle, the Saints ran away with a 78-58 win.
Aware Fort Qu'Appelle didn't have much of a rest in between games, Karcha's game plan heading into the match was to take advantage of his opponent's fatigue.
"Fort Qu'Appelle didn't seem to have much conditioning, so we went in wanting to run on them a lot to tire them out," said Karcha. "And that worked as we ended up getting the lead like 25-2 within five minutes. So we kind of coasted the rest of the way and got everyone playing time."
In replace of Walkington at centre, David Ojo shinned in the opportunity, scoring 22 points.
"David Ojo played so well," added Karcha. "He's only in grade 10, so he has a bright future ahead of him."
Ranked seventh in their region by the Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association, the Saints square off against Watrous in their first game in regionals this upcoming weekend in Shaunavon.
Karcha is confident his club will come out with the win in their first contest.
"I would expect to beat Watrous, but I don't know much about them," he said.
If Sacred Heart wins their region, they advance to Hoopla the following weekend in Saskatoon.
