The Sacred Heart Saints junior football team rounded out their 2010 season with a 21-6 victory over the visiting Melville Cobras last Tuesday on Sacred Heart field.

The day was completed by near-perfect runs downfield by Matt Kustra which saw him make his way the length of the field down to the two-yard line.

Cameron Peepeetch also had a lengthy run off of a kickoff return.

"It's the first time in my memory that we've had back-to-back kickoff returns for touchdowns," claimed Darcy Todos, head coach of the Sacred Heart High School Saints.

After playing to a scoreless tie throughout the opening half, Peepeetch opened the scoring on a kickoff return to give the Saints a 6-0 lead, they also connected on a two-point convert to make it an 8-0 lead.

Melville was able to answer back with a major however the Saints defence intercepted the two-point attempt. The second kickoff returned-TD was scored by Aaron Burback and the Saints opted for the single-point conversion to put them up 15-6.

Despite Melville threatening to score to tie the game, SHHS held tight on defence and on special teams to win the game.

After a 60+ yard gain by Kustra, SHHS got one last touchdown off a third-and-short attempt when David Boroto made his way into the end zone to cap the scoring in a 21-6 win.

Todos said after the game that even though there are no more games left in the season, the SHHS juniors can take pride in knowing they had a good season.

"Oh definitely," says Todos moments after a team picture was taken.

"They definitely made strides in their ability to play this season."

It was an interesting experience for the entire team; almost half of the entire roster was provide by elementary schools within the Christ the Teacher school division, meaning that half of them weren't even SHHS students.

"We almost had a completely Gr. 8 backfield," laughed Todos.

He added that Kustra and Clark Bazin are among the players that he expects to see back playing again next season.

Following the season finale, Bazin said "it was a pretty exciting season" but also added that it was "frustrating at times" as well.
