The Sacred Heart High School (SHHS) Saints boys soccer team are off to the 2A Saskatchewan High School Championships in Warman this Friday and Saturday after qualifying with a win over Vanier High School in Moose Jaw, says SHHS coach Scott Hoffort.
The Saints played a spirited match against the Moose Jaw High School champs, finishing with a 1-nil final score.
Colin Shewchuk was the lone goal scorer for the SHHS Saints putting a beautiful shot into the top left corner over the Vanier keeper.
The Saints played great defence throughout the match.
Brock Liebrecht was stellar in goal recording the shutout. The Saints moved on to the Regional final game against a talented Moose Jaw Central squad.
The match was exciting from start to finish, says Hoffort. Central led 1-nil after the first half.
With the pressure on in the second half, Jacob Okeny made a beautiful pass to Elias Giannoulis who made no mistake putting a shot into the left low corner.
The match ended up tied at the end of regulation time.
Two five-minute halves were played with Central putting home the winner with less than two minutes left in the second half of overtime.
The final score was 2-1 Moose Jaw Central. With the win over Moose Jaw Vanier, the Saints will travel to Warman to defend their 2A High School provincial title.
Health-wise, the Saints appear to be in good shape, notes Hoffort.
"We have a few knocks but nothing that will keep any players out. We will be good for the weekend.
Also in contention for the 2A title this year will be: Regina Miller Comprehensive School, Regina O'Neill, Saskatoon Evan Hardy, Warman, Humboldt, Saskatoon Aden Bowman and Moose Jaw Central.
Coach Hoffort stated, "the boys played well in Moose Jaw and we are looking forward to some excellent soccer up in Warman. Hopefully we can bring back another title for our school and our city."
