The Sacred Heart High School (SHHS) senior girls volleyball team travelled to Estevan this weekend to take part in a seven- team round robin tournament.
SHHS began the tournament against Oxbow winning the first set 25 - 22 but dropped the second set 18 - 25.
In the next match the Estevan senior team took the first set 22 - 25, but the Lady Saints fought back with a convincing 25 - 10 win in the second set.
In the final match Friday night a strong team from Carlyle beat the Saints 14 - 25 and 23 - 25.
Saturday morning's first match was against the Estevan juniors. SHHS took a commanding 11 - 1 lead on the serving strength of Morgan Shymanski.
But Estevan fought back tying the set at 17 - 17, eventually SHHS regained control and won 25 - 19. The second set was all SHHS, winning 25 - 13. Then a strong team from Weyburn defeated the Saints 14 - 25 and 19 - 25.
In the final match of the round robin, SHHS faced Midale with each team having the same record.
In the first set Midale struck first winning 19 - 25 but SHHS displayed a lot of heart with a strong second set winning 25 - 19.
FIFTH PLACE
Sacred Heart finished in fifth place and faced Oxbow in the quarter final. This playoff match was the third in a row for SHHS.
"The exhaustion showed as the Lady Saints were never able to gain an upper hand losing 12 - 25 and 16 - 25," reports coach Perry Enns.
"Shymanski and Kristen Jonassen played exceptionally well this weekend. Jonassen was a leader defensively as well as recording many timely spike kills for SHHS."
