SASKATOON — The Saskatoon Blades started a five-game homestand by shutting out Edmonton, 5-0, on Saturday and beating the Regina Pats, 5-2, on Sunday. The Saskatoon homestand continues this week with the Medicine Hat Tigers visiting on Friday.
The squad is currently on a three-game winning streak and has won eight of its last 10. The Blades are 14-4-0-0 on the season and sat third in the Western Hockey League’s Eastern Conference as of Sunday.
On Saturday, Ethan Chadwick turned away all of the 21 shots the Oil Kings sent at him to record his first WHL shutout. The Blades received balanced scoring as five different players lit the lamp: Aidan De La Gorgendiere, Jayden Wiens, Vaughn Watterodt, Trevor Wong and Egor Sidorov. Sidorov seemed to be everywhere, recording four points. Oil Kings goalie Ronin Geraghty made 38 saves.
A strong start helped the Blades beat the visiting Pats, 5-2, on Sunday with 7,868 looking on. Wong and Wiens, on a power play, put the Blades up 2-0 in the first period. Lukas Hansenn made it a 3-0 lead for the club in the second. Bedard and Suzdalev, on a powerplay, scored late in the second session and early in the third to pull the Pats to within one, 3-2. Wiens got his second power play marker of the contest to increase the Blades’ lead to 4-2. Watterodt wrapped up the scoring with an empty net goal. In net, Austin Elliott earned the win with 32 saves. Sim made 22 saves in the loss.
