The Sacred Heart High School senior boys Saints basketball team fell short in Lumsden this past weekend in the annual Super Hoops Mania tournament, finishing with a 1-2 record.
"I was hoping to get at least two wins," said Sacred Heart head coach Garrett Karcha. "It was a bit disappointing. I thought we could have played better than we did."
The Saints squared off against Shaunavon in their first match on Thursday.
Despite losing 79-62, Karcha was happy with his squad's performance against the league's No. 1 ranked team.
"I was happy with how we played against Shaunavon," he said. "Shaunavon is one of the top teams in 3A. We wanted to play them to see where we are at. Afterwards, their coach said we were on of the best teams they played. So I was really happy with that."
The Saints dropped the ball in their second game against Melfort, falling 52-44.
"We stunk it up against Melfort," Karcha said. "We had a terrible last quarter. We just couldn't score. That game was definitely a disappointment."
Having watched Lumsden struggle in the York City Classic the weekend before, the Saints were confident they could pull off a win in their final game.
"Against Lumsden, I knew they are in a rebuilding season after seeing them play in our York City Classic the weekend before, so I expected to get the win," said Karcha.
The Saints didn't underestimate their opponents, capturing a 47-39 victory.
"It was a good experience for some of our guys to get a fair amount of playing time that normally wouldn't play that much," adds Karcha. "We got the win and gave some of our young guys some good experience, so I was happy with how it played out."
