The Sacred Heart Saints athletics awards banquet was held last Monday at the St. Mary's Cultural Centre.
It was also the final awards night for principal Chad Holinaty who will be moving onto another position.
"It was a great experience with our Gr. 12 group (in particular)," he said, referring to the several students who, like Holinaty were likely at their last athletics awards banquet.
It was his final go at the award presentations and he said he will miss it.
It was a good night for a handful of SHHS students, including the Ruff brothers who won two of four awards from the senior boys basketball team.
Other notables saw Gr. 12 multi-athlete Preston Liebrecht bring home awards from two different sports, as well as part of the group that won plaques for the Greatest Contribution to SHHS Sports.
Holinaty said it's guys like Liebrecht whom he hopes will advance to the college/university point and perhaps make a few more newspaper headlines later on.
"Preston Liebrechtthrough track and field or other sports," said Holinaty.
"Dylan Johnson, hockey, football, hopefully we haven't seen the last of him," says Holinaty of another member of the Gr. 12 clan who has spent time on the court, field (and on the ice with the Terriers) and won multiple awards that night.
"There were a lot of good things to celebrate."
Several others won two awards each.
BADMINTON
From the junior boys badminton team, Jake Holinaty won the team MVP, Kris Pidperhoya won the Most Improved award, Laura Vachon won the St. Sebastian award, and there was no top rookie given out.
From the SHHS senior badminton team, the MVP award was split between Dylan Johnson and Anthony Fetsch; the first of two awards each for both boys. Sister Rita was named the team's Most Improved Player. Rianna Skikewich was named Top Rookie. The St. Sebastian award was split between two student, Eilish Stranaghan and Brianna Ostafie.
CURLING
Four names were called out for SHHS curling. Leta Perepeluk was named Most Valuable Player, Brianna Ostafie was named Most Improved Player; Tanner Kinaschuk took home the Top Rookie Award and Nathan Guy won the St. Sebastian Award.
BASKETBALL
Three named were called out for SHHS junior girls basketball. Bryce Sherring was named Most Valuable Player, Hailey Vitkauskas was voted Most Improved Player, there was no top rookie named.
Stephanie Sturtz was voted the winner of the St. Sebastian Award.
Emily Kruger won the Most Valuable Player Award for the SHHS senior girls basketball team, Meagan Yagelniski was named the team's Most Improved Player, Hannah Hansen was voted the Top Rookie this year.
Connor Rosluk took home the St. Sebastian Award.
Two members of this year's SHHS junior boys basketball team had their names called out. David Ojo took home the team's Most Valuable Player award while Rawlee Wyatt took the Most Improved Player honour.
Dylan Johnson second of three awards came when his coach called out the Most Improved Player of the SHHS senior boys basketball team.
"He developed (himself) into a crucial asset coming off the bench to play the centre position. He also balanced basketball into his already busy sports calendar," offered coach Karcha.
Preston Liebrecht won his first of three awards; he was named the St. Sebastian Award winner, Carter Ruff took the Top Rookie plaque.
"The future of the Saints' boys basketball team is in good hands," offered coach Garrett Karcha of Ruff and his three other Gr. 10 players. There was another split in the Most Valuable Player Award, Nathan Ruff and Logan Coutts.
CHEERLEADERS
From the SHHS cheer/stunt team, Shelby Schill has her name emblazoned on a plaque as the team's Most Valuable Player.
Taylor Ringdal won the Most Improved Player award.
Courtney Dudley was named the Top Rookie.
Lori Malinowski was handed out the St. Sebastian Award.
The last sport award of the evening was the SHHS track and field group.
Liebrecht shared the Most Valuable Player Award with Brooke Mentanko; it was the third split MVP award of the night.
Rita Fetsch's second of three awards came with the Most Improved Award, Top Rookie honours went to Caleb Sutter, and Kruger also won her second of three awards when she got the St. Sebastian Award.
The final award of the evening went to 10 students.
Liebrecht, Anthony and Rita Fetsch, Johnson, Emily and sister Allison Kruger were part of the group that won for Greatest Contribution to SHHS Sports. Jake Holinaty, Caleb Sutter, Kaitlyn Inglis and Bryce Sherring rounded out the list.
Liebrecht was also the top point getter, with this being his final month as a student at SHHS. He topped Rita Fetsch for the end of this year by two points. Liebrecht finishes with 110 points; Fetsch finishes the year with 108, brother Anthony sits in third with 106. Emily Kruger, Dylan Johnson, Allison Kruger, Caleb Sutter, Bryce Sherring, Jake Holinaty, Kaitlin Inglis and Colin Shewchuk rounded out the top 10 students athletics (see photo).
"I'm very proud of the group results," Holinaty signed off.
