The Richardson Pee Wee AAA Cardinals were within a whisker of sending a big game into extra innings.
Tyler Stratechuk stepped up to the plate in the bottom of their last chance inning with his team trailing by three runs.
Cards coach Kevin Shirtliffe said the game had some interesting implications around it.
It was a tournament game as well as a league game; winner would advance to the next round of the B2 Digital Pee Wee AAA league playoffs.
Weyburn had given Stratechuk and the Cardinals all sorts of problems earlier in the season when the two teams met up in Weyburn, who went on to two absolute blowout victories.
At this game at the Melville Regional Park, the same two teams hooked up for a game with double importance for both clubs. They were originally scheduled to play the day before (Thursday) in Weyburn, as the first-place Beavers had home field advantage.
The score was a lot closer in this game but the Cardinals couldn't drive home the game-tying run.
Stratechuk's hit was snagged by the shortstop who had to go airborne to make the catch, made it nicely, and that was the ball game.
Yorkton closed to within a run but fell 5-4 in the end.
"This was a very good game," offered head coach Shirtliffe, who noted that this Weyburn club has the potential to beat (the pants) off anybody they play.
"They have the potential to pound us," says Shirtliffe. "We have the potential to beat them (though)," he added.
"I'm proud of the way we played. We got into some trouble in the first inning" when Weyburn seemed to score runs off of every hit, building up a 5-0 lead.
When Stratechuk stepped up to the plate, Yorkton trailed by three runs and he brought home two.
"I knew we had a legitimate chance," says Shirtliffe, adding that it was drumming up a possible "Cinderella finish".
Yorkton got to the second round of the playoffs following a 5-2 win over Melville in Yorkton last Tuesday.
