About 40 locals took part in the recent Queen City Marathon.

Megan Varga and Cheryl Kustra were part of the Yorkton brigade that came home with medals around their necks.

"I trained three times per week," says 12-year-old Varga.

"This was probably the most exciting experience of my life," says Cheryl, who noted that her background is in recreational studies so she fit right in.

"I ran it with my daughter. I thought it was a huge challenge for me personally. It was an amazing experience."

Varga ran in the 11-17 age division, a 3-kilometre run, that challenged her too, she said.

It was full of "feisty runners," says the 12-year-old. "My legs hurt for two full days (afterward)."

She said she placed in 75th out of 111 competitors.

It was her third time running the race, which gave those involved a pretty good tour by foot of downtown Regina.

"We ran all around the lake, over the overpass," adds Mrs. Kustra. "The roads were all blocked off, too."

"I will probably do it again next year," says Varga, who ran her race alone.

Mrs. Kustra did part of her race with friend Tricia Korczak.
