The YUFC U16 girls soccer team continued their indoor soccer season with a trip to Saskatoon for this year's provincial tournament.

There were eight teams in total.

The Yorkton team would go on to add a fourth gold medal to their collection, an accomplishment coach Alfredo Bermudez said he is very proud of.

The Yorkton United Futbol Club (YUFC) U16 girls' soccer team won the Provincial Division II Indoor Soccer championships held in Saskatoon.

The YUFC squad, coached by Alfredo Bermudez and Thor Berge, played five matches.

Their opening game had them play against Tisdale.

Rita Fetsch scored three goals in a 5-nil victory. Edie Schramm got the shutout in the Yorkton net.

Defender Allison Berge said she was nervous this being her first shot at a provincial championship, said all the nerves went away "after we started scoring goals".

I was really excited."

Their second game was against Regina Unidad. Fetsch, Kristen Jonassen and Kendra Varjassy all got on the scoresheet in a 4-nil win.

The third game saw the U16s challenged for the first time in the tournament when they played against Prince Albert Celtic.

Prince Albert was the only challenge the team faced throughout their matches in the tournament, according to some of the players.

"Probably Prince Albert," insisted defender Roma Zulyniak when asked who gave her team the biggest test.

Schramm allowed her first goal of the tournament as her team played to a 1-1 draw.

"They were more physical," said middle fielder Kelsey Woloschuk, before adding "we knew it going into it".

We came together as a team and worked harder

Usually a 1-1 game uses overtime or extra time to decide a winner.

According to coach Bermudez, that was not the case this time.

Instead of playing an overtime or going to penalty kicks, and also due to time restraints for the tournament, it was decided that the winner would be determined by a coin toss, says Bermudez.

"Everything was equal after that game," he said.

They would use a coin toss to determine the top team in the pool.

This was not the first time he's seen a coin toss used to determine top seed, but it was the first time in a provincial championship, he said.

According to Bermudez, it was his idea, Prince Albert called the toss while the coin was in the air, and Yorkton went on to win it.

That put the Yorkton U16s into the semi finals against a strong Humboldt team, explains Bermudez.

"That was not an easy game," he said. "It was a little bit up and down.

They would hold on for a 2-nil victory, he said.

Yorkton would then meet Lloydminster to determine the tournament winner.

"Both teams were physical," he said, adding that he thought it "would be a closer game".

He had his entire roster minus one player and won 4-1.

It was their fourth gold medal of the indoor soccer season.

To go along with the gold medal, the Yorkton U16 team was also the winner of the Fair Play Award, he said.

Bermudez points out that the team finished the season with a 14-2 record. They had 65 goals scored and 11 allowed. The Fair Play Award was voted on by the officiating crew at the 2012 provincials.
