"Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life," said the Chinese philosopher Confucius. If that is true, Kelly Friesen, Yorkton This Week's new sports reporter won't be doing much work.

"I don't want to get a real job and this is more like a hobby I get paid to do," he said.

Friesen, 22, grew up in Carrot River where his parents Sunia and Robert still live. He grew up playing hockey, his favourite sport, and played basketball in high school.

"I always loved sports," he said. "I started writing as a hobby, then a couple of websites offered me small jobs and it snowballed from there."

Sports writing jobs don't grow on trees, so Friesen enrolled in Saskatoon Business College after graduating from Carrot River High in 2008.

"I wanted to have a bit of a backup plan," he said.

While working various backup-plan jobs, Friesen wrote for mckeen's Hockey, The Fourth Period magazine and, most notably, Yahoo! Canada Sports as a popular blogger.

It was still only part-time, though, so when the opportunity to work full-time for Yorkton This Week came up, he gladly packed his bags and made the move from Saskatoon.

So far, Yorkton suits him fine.

"It's a nice little town," he said.

"You have everything, but you don't have the huge traffic rushes like you do in Saskatoon."
