They aren't the Detroit Red Wings (or the Sharks, or the Canucks) but they are the latest winners of the President's Cup.

The trophy, which has become a symbol of excellence in the sport of hockey over the years, is awarded once per season to the best team out there.

Often given to the league's first place team, it symbolizes one of two steps that a hockey player makes. The Wings have won the NHL version of the President's Trophy six times and now the Pee Wee Sherring Gold AA Yorkton Terrier hockey team has it too.

Team officials say they believe that Sherring Gold is the first Yorkton team to win it, at least in recent years.

Yorkton head coach Ed Zawatsky told the media that the President's Cup his team won, goes to the top team in the league which they compete in, the Â鶹´«Ã½AV Saskatchewan Minor Hockey League.

His Terriers also completed their season on home ice, the Farrell Agencies Arena with a beatdown of the Moose Jaw Warriors, 9-2.

It was their second win in two tries over the weekend and guaranteed the team their first-pace finish in the league standings. Sunday afternoon's victory gave them their 20th win of the season.

The next team in line is the Estevan Bruins with 17 points.

Zawatsky said it's been a great year.

"It's a complement to this group of kids," he told the paper following a few photo sessions on the ice and in the dressing room.

"They worked extremely hard."

He added that every player on the team has their own strength and that's what led to them finishing the season with a perfect record of 20-0.

"You are only as good as your weakest link," indicated Zawatsky, who added that each of them is able to play in different situations.

"They're really fun to coach. They're eager to learn."

The Sherring Gold AA Terriers are coached by Ed Zawatsky, Damon Kustra, Noel Budz and managed by Wade Miller.

All sits well for the Pee Wees right now, however things will surely get interesting as they head out of the province to compete in an international hockey tournament later in the winter, says Zawatsky.

The team is prepared to hit the road for Quebec where they will play against teams they've likely never seen before. Zawatsky said it's a prestigious gathering of teams that will make it that far.

He told the paper that 200 teams have put in applications to play in Quebec and half of them will play.

"It will be interesting to see if we can compete."
