Robert Okeny and Preston Liebrecht, recent graduates of Sacred Heart High School, were both invited to take part in this year's Saskota Bowl football game in Melfort last week.
Okeny explained through electronic communication that it was an experience that began in the spring and ended this past week when they found out they made the team. "Preston and I obviously both made the team since we are now here in Melfort," explains Okeny of himself and teammate Preston Liebrecht, via Facebook message to the paper on July 3.
According to Okeny, it was one great big football camp and there were a lot of players that neither of them had ever seen before.
"After we made the cut, the players from around the province who also made the team, travelled down to Melfort where we were training from Sunday to Thursday (July 1-4) in preparation for the game.
Before coming on this trip I was fairly skeptical and didn't really want to come but as things (were) progressing, I really want to win this game against North Dakota."
Team Saskatchewan went on to defeat North Dakota 36-26 at the MUCC Field.
Saskatchewan quarterback Jayden Wood-Sparrow threw three touchdown passes while Logan Frohaug and Sacred Heart's Preston Liebrecht had two catches each.
Okeny said it was only the second time that Saskatchewan won this game.
