MC Knoll Grades 7 and 8 girls and boys are both elementary school Volleyball city champions.
The highlight of the tournament was the girls' final between MC Knoll and St. Paul's, said Michael Laskowski, president of the Yorkton Elementary School Sports Association (YESSA) and organizer of the championship tournament.
"The girls split the first two sets and the last set went right down to the wire with MC Knoll winning 15-13," he said.
On the boys' side, MC Knoll defeated building co-habitant St. Michael's in straight sets.
The two-day, citywide championship featured teams from the four public and four separate schools at four different venues. Laskowski said after a two-month season the city championship is a very special event.
"This is the showcase for the athletes," he said. "It's the culmination of the season and a chance for them to show their stuff."
More than 200 student athletes participated in the tournament that ran Wednesday November 14 and Thursday November 15.
Laskowski said the event this year was better than ever.
"What I've seen is participation is really up," he said. "And, especially when we get the semi-finals and finals, the calibre of play is top notch. That's a testament to the coaching. It's a sport that's gaining momentum.
The tournament took a round robin format with two pools. The top four teams from each pool played crossover quarter-finals leading to the semis and final.
Elementary schools do not participate in regional or provincial playoffs.
