The Saskatchewan High School Athletics Association (SHSAA) soccer scene has kicked off locally with the Sacred Heart boys team putting on a four team tournament.
Involved was Regina's Luther High, Kipling School and the Yorkton Regional High School, says Scott Hoffort, of the SHHS team.
"The Saints began the day with a match against the Luther Lions," says Hoffort. "This was an exciting match with a large amount of the play in the Luther side of the field." The Luther keeper was on his game however, as SHHS managed to score only once, coming off a shot by Nahuel Simonet, in a 2-1 loss.
Things went their way a little more in their next match, one that put them up against their YRHS rivals.
In a 7-1 win, rookie Ben Fetsch lit it up with three goals. Simonet scored twice and singles were scored by Jacob Okeny and Adam Burym.
"Our offence on track in our second game. Our boys were more aggressively leading to better scoring opportunities," continued Hoffort. The third date of the tournament was against the last team,Kipling, says Hoffort.
"This was a hard-fought match with solid play from both sides. The Saints ended up with a 4-1 win. Fetsch scored twice while Okeny and Jacob Holinaty each tallied once.
Luther went on to take the title with a perfect 3-0 record.
Hoffort said the tournament was a good way to see where his team stacks up in comparison to other school.
"Overall, we are pleased with our play in this tournament," stated coach Hoffort. "I think we learned in each match and will be able to use those lessons in our future challenges."
Sacred Heart will be heading to Moose Jaw for the 2A boys regional qualifier on Oct. 20.
According to Hoffort, this will be of the upmost importance.
"This will determine whether they (we) will get the chance to defend our SHSAA two-time provincials crown."
