Springside's Katelyn Breitkreuz does her best to keep an Angel's defender away from a loose puck as well as go for it herself Sunday afternoon during East saskatchewan Female Hockey League action at the Springside Arena. Springside came out on top by a 5-1 final score. The team heads to Weyburn this week to wrap up the 2011 portion of the season.

The road thus far has been rather sweet for the Springside Parkland Lions bantam 'A' girls' hockey team and they found out over the weekend that home ice is too.

After starting out the season with a handful of away games, and having to play their home games in Kamsack, the Lions found out that they are becoming quite balanced.

"We've got a pretty good team this year," says head coach Herb Breitkreuz Sunday afternoon following their win at Springside Arena.

They played their first games in their real home arena, the Springside Arena over the weekend, hosting three games, two on Saturday and a third game Sunday afternoon.

Springside delivered wins in all three games, allowing a total of four goals scored against them all weekend.

Facing the Weyburn McDonald's Angels, two out of three periods went by scoreless.

Springside did their damage in the second period, scoring all five goals in that middle frame, en route to a 5-1 victory.

"We score goals in bunches," observed coach Breitkreuz. "(But) we get a little complacent (at times)."

We have three lines that can score."

Katelyn Breitkreuz led with three goals and an assist.

Ashley Hume and Brooke Huska added singles in the Lions' victory.

Huska, Abbey Hollinger and Tracy Prybylski led in helpers with two assists apiece.

One day earlier (Saturday), the Lions played back-to-back hockey games, hosting Swift Current and the Prairie Storm.

Against the Swift Current Colts, Springside found the back of the net at least once in each period, scored early and never looked back.

Huska and Alexis Schwartz led with two goals apiece.

Hume and Katelyn Breitkreuz each added singles in a 6-1 win, which saw them score three times in the third period.

The Lions' six goals came after Rhyann Braun opened the scoring for the visiting Colts.

Later that afternoon, Springside scored seven times on the way to beating the Prairie Storm 7-2. Hume led the way with the hat trick performance, and added an assist late in the third period.

Prybylski, Huska, Hollinger and Jessica Lutz each had singles.

The wins over the weekend have Springside within the top three placings in the East Saskatchewan Female Hockey League standings.

Estevan Bulldogs were seated in number one going into last weekend, with a record of 11 wins, one loss and a tie. The Fort Qu'Appelle was in second place at nine wins, two losses and three ties. Springside was third going into last weekend at eight wins and one loss.
