The Yorkton Lady Raiders senior volleyball team were in Prince Albert on the weekend for the provincial 5A championships.

"Things went OK," offered coach Lee Poncelet, who added the team actually met its goal by being at the tourney. "We set our goal at the beginning of the year to make provincials."

Poncelet said his team really came on throughout the season to achieve that goal.

"The girls played so well the last half of the year," he said.

Once at provincials the Lady Raiders did struggle finishing last in their pool of five teams.

"The teams there are pretty strong. We didn't fare as well as we hoped," he said.

But Poncelet said the Lady Raider program will be stronger for the experience.

"It had been a while since we'd been to provincials," he said, adding making the final 10 was a big step. "It was great to be part of it."

The Lady Raiders graduate only one Grade 12 this year; Jodie Onda-Inglis. Poncelet said she was a big part of the team, but with nine girls eligible to return next season he is excited, adding that is the highest percentage of potential returnees among teams at provincials.

"We're hosting provincials next year," he said, adding that gives the school an automatic berth. "A corer group like that will represent the school well."
