For the Kamsack Pee Wee Flyers, the hockey season came to an abrupt end on March 12 at the Broda Sporstsplex after they heralded a win against the Grenfell team in the C banner playoffs.
鈥淭he hockey season ended because of the COVID-19 coronavirus, and the Flyers were up in the series 1 to 0 after a dominating in a 6 to 2 win Thursday night in Kamsack,鈥� said Jeremy Allard, head coach. 鈥淭he Flyers were scheduled to play game two in Grenfell on March 20 where they would have likely been presented with the league banner.鈥�
鈥淭hese kids have worked so hard all season, they came together as a team and earned their place in the C banner finals,鈥� said Christie DeBruyen, team manager. 鈥淲ith the sudden end to the season it is so great that they came out with a win!听 It was well deserved and we are very proud of them.鈥�
During the game, both teams came up scoreless in the first period. Kamsack scored three goals in the second period: Kealand Thomas with two, and Bryden Cochrane with one.
In the third period pucks were sunk by Kamsack鈥檚 Kayden Vidomski with two and Robbie Grieve with one goal and one assist.
Other game assists went to: Chase Hembling, Cameron Allard, Slade Shankowsky and Kayden Quewezance.
Team assistant coaches are Kent Hembling, Ryan Gareau and Derek Shankowsky.
Earlier in the season, on February 29 at the Broda Sportsplex, the Kamsack Pee Wee Flyers turned their home-ice advantage into a home tournament win.
The Flyers hosted the Flin Flon Bombers, Dauphin Kings and Roblin Stars in an exciting day of hockey, according to Allard, coach and an organizer. Each team played one another for a total of three games each.
听鈥淭he last game of the day was between Kamsack and the Dauphin,鈥� said Allard. 鈥淏oth teams played great hockey and it was a battle right to the final buzzer. The Flyers came out on top with a final score of 4 to 3. The Flyers was the only team to win all three games so they won the 2020 Kamsack Pee Wee Tournaments Championship Banner.鈥�
There was also a fun skills competition with four different events throughout the day. All players competed in the events to earn points towards their "team score,鈥� Allard continued.听
鈥淭he first event was the accuracy shooting,鈥� he said. 鈥淭hree players from each team were selected to shoot and their times were combined to crown a winner of the event. The three players competing for the home town Flyers were Cameron Allard, Kayden Quewezance and Jackson Gareau. Cameron Allard was the fastest player overall to hit all four targets with a time of 17.3 seconds. However, the fastest overall team score was the Roblin Stars with 84.4 seconds.鈥�
The second event was the fastest skater. Again, three players from each team were selected to skate a lap of the ice and their times were combined to select the team winner. Kamsack players competing in this event were Bobby Taylor, Kayden Vidomski and Robbie Grieve. Vidomski was the fastest skater with a time of 14.57 seconds.听
鈥淭he fastest team score was the Kamsack Flyers, whose combined total was an impressive 44.9 seconds,鈥� Allard said.
The next event was a test of both the best goalie and the best 鈥渟hoot-out鈥� shooter. Kamsack shooters were Chase Hembling, Bryden Cochrane and Kealand Thomas.听 Brooke Taylor was the goalie in net for the Flyers.听 Overall, the best shooter was Thomas who scored four goals on his first five attempts.听
鈥淭he winning team in this event was named through a tiebreaker and the Flin Flon Bombers won with the highest combined total of goals between the three shooters,鈥� said Allard. 鈥淭he best goalie was Cohan Odowichuk who played net for the Roblin team and stopped nine out of 12 shots. There was a tiebreaker for the second place goalie where Baley Schwartz of Flin Flon faced off against Brooke Taylor of Kamsack. It was a very close battle, and Baley eventually took second place.鈥澨�
The skills competition finished up with a 鈥渇un team Tug of War鈥� where teams faced off against each other. Ten players from each team were selected to compete and the Roblin Stars won that event.
The aggregate team points had the Roblin Stars named the winners of the skills competition, receiving a team Pizza Party donated by the Iron Grill.
There was a raffle table, a 鈥渟hoot-to-win鈥� competition, player 50/50 and a 50/50 draw, according to DeBruyn, team manager and an organizer.
鈥淭he day was a success and all teams had a lot of fun,鈥� said Allard. 鈥淚t鈥檚 always great to see the rink so busy and the kids having fun playing a game they love!鈥�
The Saskatchewan Hockey Association (SHA) has subsequently cancelled all of its programming in the province in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.
