The Kambusters Drag Racing Association is getting back to its roots as it prepares for its annual weekend of racing.

“We’re trying to do something a little something different,” explained Kambusters spokesperson Frank Pohozoff.

Last summer the Kambusters brought in more feature cars than in the past, and Pohozoff said those drivers and crews tend to take just a little longer making sure everything is just right before heading down the track.

“We had lots of comments that it was taking too long,” he said.

While organizers understood with more speed and power drivers want everything just right, many of the fans attending the long-running event are casual drag race fans and they wanted more racing.

“Having a ton of faster cars made it kind of boring because of the time, that was what we were hearing,” said Pohozoff.

So this year there will be fewer feature cars, with the group just bringing in Webb Family Motorsports for some high end passes down the track.

But there will be more focus on racers heading out with their regular cars, which Pohozoff said has always been the core feature of the event.

“We’re kind of getting back to our roots a bit,” he said.

To further build on the grassroots of the Aug. 11 and 12 weekend, Pohozoff said they are going to offer what are essentially beginner races. The cars won’t be bracketed based on their times, but instead two cars will head to the line and race head-to-head.

“There will be grudge races,” said Pohozoff with a smile.

The races will be an ideal way to start racing for new drivers, something Pohozoff said they always want to encourage.

“We’re there to teach people and instruct them on the sport,” he said. “We know it can be intimidating out there.”

New racers can also get some pointers and experience by taking their cars to the airport May 20 for a ‘Test & Tune’ day, a chance to head down the track and see how their cars perform.

Pohozoff said the Kambusters are also looking for volunteers, adding it is a great way to get close to the action, and help out at the same time.

Anyone wishing to volunteer, or who has questions about racing can call 641-6276, 621-1172, or 621-6962.
