Well, it had to come to an end sooner or later.
And it came to an end on Sunday morning. And Monday too.
How many times in a row has a Western Major Baseball League game been played out either here in Yorkton or on the road?
The count should be pretty close to 20.
The first round of the Â鶹´«Ã½AV East league playoffs, just when everything seemed to be going quite smoothly in terms of games getting played, experienced no rainouts the past couple of weeks. Then, just when the playoffs are ready to get going, the rain starts falling.
Monday saw the WMBL game get postponed until Tuesday of this week, and the SESBL game get called off, likely until tonight.
The Pee Wees and Bantams have both been getting their fair share of games in with the weather co-operatingalmost to the point where it gets unbearable, especially when it comes to trying to get some sleep at night.
Insanely high levels of humidity won't cancel a baseball game or a soccer game and definitely won't cancel a lacrosse game, but makes bed time a little harder sometimes.
Going back over the past 3-4 weeks or so, it's been awesome for weather, little overly hot sometimes but the WMBL Cardinals have played close to 25 games so far with only a handful of games not getting played due to weather.
According to the WMBL web site, there was a cancellation on June 18 for the game between Yorkton and the Edmonton Prospects. There hasn't been another game cancelled due to rain until July 11 when Yorkton and Melville were scheduled to get together. Then another one got cancelled as of 1:14 p.m., Monday (CMT).
Twenty games, both home and away, were played out in between those two dates.
Twenty minutes of rain last Thursday ended up being enough to dampen the field to the point that it was unplayable.
This past weekend, Kevin Shirtliffe, Mike Farquaharson and Monte Taphorn, and Grant Bjornerud and Shawn Frankfurt got their baseball teams together and trekked to the Melville Regional Park where their teams competed in a tournament in one of the most interesting setups for a baseball complex I've ever seen in my life. One second you are sitting there cheering on your kid during the game, five minutes later, your feet are up, enjoying the family BBQ in a nice little motor home.
The weather called for that on Friday, the temperature likely surpassed 30 degrees and it did not let up throughout the work hours.
It also usually makes for the best weather as the day wears on, the humidity goes down.
Friday and Saturday were both good weather days for baseball. Sunday, not so much.
Thank goodness for indoor facilities. The lacrosse team was inside a rink somewhere in Saskatoon and the Philippino/Canadian Association held their second day of basketball games indoors as the weather wouldn't permit such activities outdoors.
