The Yorkton Harvest held their first spring camp under newly appointed head coach Dan Cross on April 26-27.

"It was good to get a look at all of the players and get feel for being the head coach," said Cross. "It was nice to get started at preparing for next year."

Approximately 120 players from the 300 invited took part in the camp.

"It's pretty much an open invite," said Cross. "We had kids inquire about the camp and we let them come to it."

Although a strong showing at the camp can go a long way, Cross doesn't put too much stock into players' performances at the spring camp.

"If you really standout, we definitely take notice," he said. "We signed some players over the weekend who had really good camps. But for the most part, it's just to get a feel for the players. The fall camp is the big one. Then we narrow it down to 50-60 players and go from there."

The camp entailed some fights, but for the most part, they were basically friends just clowning around.

"I think there were two fights," said Cross. "But the guys who dropped the gloves knew each other and were just fooling around. They were mainly just putting on a show for everyone who came out."

Just before the spring camp, Cross hired Kevin Rawlick as his assistant coach for the upcoming season.

"Kevin is an acquaintance of mine and I think he'll be a good coach," said Cross. "He use to play AAA midget, in the SJHL and at the college level. He understands the game well and is a good addition to our team."
