The playing season may have finished long ago, back on Tuesday, March 4th, at the hands of the eventual SMAAAHL champion Notre Dame Argos via a 4-1 loss in Wilcox, however the season never officially ended until Saturday, April 26th when the final Harvest award was handed out.
When all was said and done 16 awards to 12 different players were issued, including the most prestigious award, that for the MVP of the season.
In years past the MVP of the Yorkton Harvest would be awarded the Cambrian Cup of Excellence, however this year the club went in a different direction. They created a new trophy, retiring the old Cambrian Cup and replacing it with the even more prestigious Henley Family Trophy; a trophy named after the family of Wayne and Kae Henley as well as their sons Rick and Randy, all of which have dedicated their time and energy to bettering the Harvest Hockey Club over the past 30-plus years.
So it was fitting that the first ever Henley Family Trophy winner happened to be a third generation Harvest/Maller. Corwin Stevely, whose father and grandfather were both involved with the club in seasons past, was named the team MVP for his work both on the ice, he scored 11 goals and picked up 20 assists in 43 games, as well as off of it, as his role as team captain went far beyond the rink.
But how exactly does it feel to be named the Harvest MVP and to be given an award as important as the Henley Family Trophy? "It's a huge honour to win an award like that," offered Stevely. "It's named after a family that has done so much for the organization and it's something I'll always remember. I know its real special to Wayne and it's just as special to me."
However the Henley Family Trophy wasn't the only award that Stevely walked away with on the night. He also laid claim to the Leadership and Spirit Award, a fitting award for the second year Harvest who lead by example day in and day out, both on the ice and in life.
But Stevely wasn't the only player to win multiple awards on the night. Tanner Jeannot, a player who got better each and every game, won three awards: Most Dedicated, Rookie of the Year and Scholastic Player of the Year while leading scorer Chase McKersie won the Top Scorer and Top Forward awards.
Other award winners were Korwin Shewchuk (Most Sportsmanlike), Carson Bogdan (Top Goaltender), Drayson Skulmoski (First Last Goal Award), Boedy Donald (Most Improved), Carter Phair (Hard Luck), Damian Bentz (Coaches Choice), Koal Roberts (Mr. Hustle), Logan Leslie (Unsung Hero) and Turner Ottenbreit (Top Defenceman).
