Halloween is a time for ghosts and goblins and children going door-to-door for candy but for Andrew Wasylenchuk of Sturgis it has always meant more.

Wasylenchuk said he has always loved Halloween since he was a small child and his passion has grown into his adult years.

For the past 20 years he has been decorating his front lawn with creatures from the dark.

"It all started when my mother threw out an old bench that was supposed to go to the dump," he said. "My brother and I had a great idea to turn it into a guillotine. It was a hit and I decided to expand upon the idea.

“My brother still helps me build some things as I am not so handy with power equipment but the ideas are mine," he said.

Wasylenchuk gets some of his ideas from the Internet but has a very vivid imagination. He tries to add something new every year and usually retires some older, more aged decorations. The creatures are all home-built, using pipes and old clothing and wigs.

There are three themes: a pirate ship situated on the deck; the circus creatures located on the side of the house, and the main scene, which has an arrangement of skeletons, coffins, bats, rats and skulls. Fog, lights and sounds are all incorporated into the scenes.

"The community members and children love the decorations and make sure that our house is usually the first one that they stop at," he said.
