The Yorkton United U16 girls' soccer team are provincial champions.
They won the prestigious title July 20-22 in Regina. Going into this provincial championships, the team was on a 32-unbeaten streak.
Their outdoor season statistics include: 14 wins, no losses and three draws. Indoor statistics include: 14 wins, one loss and five draws.
At provincials, the girls played in three round-robin matches, against Saskatoon Hollandia, Regina AC and Tisdale.
The first wound up being a nil-nil draw with Edie Schramm earning the shutout. Both remaining matches wound up in Yorkton's favour, outscoring the opposition in both by a 7-0 margin.
Schramm did not allow a goal over 360 minutes of match play.
Rita Fetsch, Morgan Shymanski and Kristen Jonassen provided most of the scoring.
"Those three games completed the round robin portion of the tournament," explains team manager Adam Fetsch.
"With the tie and two wins, the girls finished first in their pool and played against the second place team from the other pool in the semi final."
In the semi final, Yorkton met Regina REU and earned a 2-1 victory after the match had gone into a shootout, explains Fetsch.
Fetsch had one in regulation and added a second in the shootout, along with Shymanski, Bailey Pelchat and Allison Berge.
That put them into the final.
They played against the Saskatoon Aurora. Adam Fetsch said the Aurora "had not lost a game all season". In the final, Saskatoon jumped out to an early 1-nil lead, scoring in the game's opening 10 minutes. The rest of the half went by with no other scoring, despite Yorkton nearly drawing even late in that first half but to no avail.
"The score remained 1-nil until there was 10 minutes remaining in the game and Rita Fetsch broke through to tie the game. This sent the game to overtime where nothing was decided."
The game went into the shootout where it took seven shooters from each team to finally decided the victor. Scoring in the penalty kicks where Berge, Pelchat, Fetsch, Kendra Varjassy and Caleigh Grunert got the eventual winner.
