Former Yorkton AAA Harvest defenceman Damon Severson was drafted over the weekend by the New Jersey Devils.
Severson, a 17-year-old who was playing for the Kelowna Rockets for the past two seasons, was selected by New Jersey with the 60th pick overall Friday night at the annual National Hockey League entry draft which was held in Pittsburgh.
Severson had a good season this past season with the Rockets, contributing 37 points in 56 games playing defence.
He was slowed down with a wrist injury that kept him out of the lineup for six weeks but rebounded nicely without any lingering effects.
Going into the entry draft, he was said to be a mid to high second round pick.
He was called out second last in that round.
Severson represented the Harvest in the 2009-10 season when he totalled 34 points in 44 games and played in four playoff games.
Severson has a great shot, good size, he can play physical and isn't afraid to fight.
According to team reports, the Rockets are hoping that he can work on conditioning in order to play more minutes, and focussing on not trying to do too much on the ice.
