The Parkland bracket of the inaugural United States Amateur Matchplay Championship was held at Patrick Park Disc Golf Course in Yorkton on Saturday, Apr. 21.

The player who wins the local bracket takes home prizes from event sponsor Dynamic Discs and is invited to the provincial bracket at the end of May which will be held at the course at Watrous, SK. The winner at the provincial level earns the opportunity to represent Saskatchewan at the final event in Emporia, KS in June.

Those taking part in the event Saturday were met with reasonable conditions given the late arrival of spring. In spite of an early chill, there very little wind and temperatures in the mid-teens made for comfortable play throughout most of the day, (but you were smart if you brought extra socks!).

Fifteen golfers took part in the event, with four advancing to next Saturday’s finals in Melville: Josh Gregory (Melville), Sam Meggs (The Pas, MB), Mark Kienle (Wadena), and Jack Talsma (Fort Qu’Appelle). The quartet will be vying for Parkland’s spot at the provincial bracket.

The final two rounds of the bracket will be happening Saturday, Apr. 28 at the course at the Melville Regional Park.
In addition to the final four battling it out a prize potluck fun round for anyone wishing to attend will be held. The potluck round will take place in the morning, with golfers being invited to stay and cheer on our finalists in the afternoon.

Six golfers stayed around to battle it out for consolation prizes provided by Lazer Wolf Disc Golf’s Zak Renwick. Nick Leclerc took home the top spot, followed by David Litzenberger and Dorian Bush, all from Yorkton.

The first tournament in the Parkland Association of Disc Golf Tournament series begins with the annual Katepwa event May 12.
