Daniels' Discusses Golf Discs

If you are a regular reader you will know I am a rather big fan of Daredevil Discs, one of two Canadian manufacturers of golf discs.

Daredevil has a strong line-up of discs and their current drivers and putters have been discussed here previously.

So this week it's a look at a pair of Daredevil mid-range offerings, the Grizzly Bear and the Caribou.

Like all Daredevil discs the graphics on the two mid-range discs are great. The use of realistic interpretations of Canadian wildlife, named after species native to this country is a nice approach aesthetically.

In terms of play, mid-range discs need to be versatile. There are times you need to be able to throw them quite a distance, and times you need to finesse them for shorter shots outside the comfort range of your putter.

The mid-range also needs predictability, because it is the disc which you are likely to be using to get out of trouble. Let's face it tee shots are open, and so are most close in putts. A mid-range shot may find you throwing out of the trees though.

Both the Grizzly Bear and Caribou throw rather straight.

I prefer the Caribou on a longer approach shot, but will go to the Grizz closer in. In general terms the Grizzly Bear tends to land flatter on most throws, which avoids the annoying roll away from the basket you can get when a disc touches down on an edge.

Since the two discs react quite similarly, but seem to perform better from different distances, the Caribou and Grizzly Bear are a nice compliment to one another in the golf bag.

Now there are several good options for mid-range discs out there, but you certainly won't be out-disced if you chose this pair from Daredevil. They have as good a performance as any from the fairway.

For a beginner I would say the Caribou is the first purchase because it is slightly better from a distance, and beginners don't generally have as great a distance off the tee, making longer fairway shots necessary.
As you grow as a disc golfer adding the Grizzly Bear will give you greater disc options, and add a steady short range disc to your arsenal.

The Caribou and Grizzly Bear are both discs you will find useful on the course, and they look sharp too, which makes them well worth checking out.
