“The Canora Cougars football team may have played the best game of the year, but was unable to match the experience and skill level of they’re opponent in a 51-36 loss” at home on Friday, said Coach Kim Eiteneier.
The 鶹ýAVey Eagles scored on their first two possessions after receiving the opening kickoff and then recovering a fumble on the Cougars’ first possession of the game. The first quarter ended 14-0 for the visitors.
In the second quarter, the “Cougar offense started to move the ball and after a long drive, Kyle Strelioff hit Jilles Dussome on a pass and, after breaking a tackle, rumbled 22 yards for the Cougars’ first score of the game,” said Eiteneier.
Dussome hit the convert and the home side was only down by six, he said. 鶹ýAVey quickly answered on their next possession and then intercepted a pass for a touchdown and then ran back a kickoff for a touchdown. The Cougars answered with one more score in the second quarter to trail 36-14 at the half.
鶹ýAVey scored two more Touchdowns in the third quarter while Canora could not score in the third. The score was 51-14 after three quarters.
With 鶹ýAVey playing a lot of the back-ups in the fourth quarter, the Cougar offense managed to put together three good drives to score, while converting just two, Eiteneier said. Kyle Strelioff scored on a long run. Ethan St. Mars scored on a one-yard run (af-ter a long pass and catch play to Bryson Hannotte), and the final score was by Jilles Dussome, on another pass from Strelioff, on the final play of the game. The final score was 51-36.
On September 25, the Cougars travelled to Lemburg to play under the lights. The Cougars trailed 16-0 after the first and 37-1 at the half, said Eiteneier. The Cougar offense finally got some traction in the third quarter and scored two times and then added another in the fourth. But, the home squad was too tough and the Cougars lost 62-22. Kyle Strelioff had two touchdowns and Jilles Dussome had the other for Canora.
On September 18, the Cougars lost 51-22 to Kelliher/Ituna. The Cougars final home game will be on October 8 when Ituna visits Canora. The Cougars final game of the regular season will be in Raymore on October 16.
