The Yorkton Cardinals of the Â鶹´«Ã½AV East Senior Baseball League took advantage of more good baseball weather Monday night and used it to take it to the Melville Bison.

Going into the contest the Cardinals were sitting at 4-5 in the SESBL standings.

After three innings with Melville Monday night at Jubilee Park, the Cards and Bison were even at 1-1.

Then the Cards loaded the bases and would score five runs off of three hits.

"That was the first time for us this year," said head coach Cliff Leschyshyn, following Yorkton's 6-1 win over Melville which puts them one point up on the Bison in the league standings.

Yorkton's pitching was turned up a notch with Colby Parachoniak on the mound, who allowed one run over seven innings of baseball.

Leschyshyn said he likes what he sees all over.

"Our pitching is getting really solid. Our errors are going down. We're playing better when we don't have any extra players," he noted.

In a home game against Swan River at the start of the month, Yorkton was getting caught in the rundown, a play which forces a baserunner to advance a base without getting tagged out while being pursued by the opposition; it happened again Monday and forced Yorkton into a pair of outs.

"We got borderline too aggressive," says Leschyshyn, pointing out that if the game had been closer, the final score may have gone the other way.

He added that the rundown is a play that requires some practice and the team hasn't been able to get much practice time in, with at least 10 players coming in from the Roblin area.

"That's a practice play and we haven't had a chance to practice that yet."

Leschyshyn added that the Melville game was a rescheduled game. The next game for Yorkton is scheduled for tomorrow night (Thursday) when they take on the Parkland Padres at 8 p.m.
