The Yorkton Cardinals seem to be fighting not only other Western Major Baseball League teams, but the weather in their search for wins this year.
Last Wednesday (June 13), a Cardinal home game against East Division-leading Regina was suspended due to rain.
Friday the Cardinals game at Melville was postponed due to weather.
Monday the Edmonton Prospects game at Jubilee Field but again weather caused a postponement.
The game was to be made up last night (Tuesday) as the first half of an evening doubleheader with the Prospects, but the results were not available at press time.
Last Thursday the Cards did have a rain-out make-up game at Jubilee Park hosting Melville.
The Millionaires plated one in the fourth inning, the eventual game-winning run as Yorkton was shut-out 3-0. Melville would add the two additional runs in the eighth.
The lack of offense cost Cardinal starter Jamie Whitehead a solid start.
He was tagged with the loss after allowing only the one run in the fourth while allowing only two hits and striking out eight over seven innings.
Ryan Talley would match Whitehead's effort going eight, allowing only two hits and striking out a matching eight to get the win for the Mills.
Saturday the Cardinals did get into some regularly scheduled action, hosting Weyburn in a doubleheader.
In game one the Cardinals' lack of offence was once more evident. They managed only one fifth inning run in a 3-1 loss to the Beavers.
Travis Donahoo started for Yorkton and went 5.1 innings allowing all three runs, all of them earned, and striking out five to be tagged with the loss.
Meanwhile Beaver starter Robbie Rocamora went the distance in the seven inning contest, scattering seven hits and allowing only the one earned run for the victory.
In the second game of the day it was the Cardinals who scored three all coming in the fourth inning, good enough for a 3-2 win.
Logan Hershenow started and took the win for Yorkton, going five innings allowing three hits and one run while striking out five.
Corey Thompson had the save tossing a scoreless seventh. Luke Hawkins went the distance, allowing only two hits, and the three runs, none of those earned for the Beavers and took the loss.
The rain-shortened schedule on the week leaves the Cardinals in a tie in the basement of the WMBL East Division with a 4-7 record, 6.5 games off the pace set by the Regina Red Sox. Weyburn also sits 6.5 games back.
Melville is second in the division, but is still 5.5 games back of the Red Sox.
