Canora Curlers Arnold Makowsky and Maxine Stinka, along with Ellen Comfort of Wadena and Murray Bottcher of Margo won the gold medal for 65+ mixed curling at the Provincial Saskatchewan Senior Fitness Association (SSFA) 55+ Games in Moose Jaw March 25-27.

The team now qualifies for the Canada 55-plus Games in Saint John, New Brunswick on August 20-24, said Stinka.

Receiving a bronze medal were Ron Hoehn and Merv Tomski of Canora who curled with two Moose Jaw curlers in the 65-plus men’s category.

The competition included 80 curlers attended in men’s, women’s and mixed bonspiels in both the 55-plus and 65-plus age categories as well as two-person stick curling 55-plus, said Stinka.

The SSFA is a volunteer, non profit organization formed in response to the need for an activity program for people 50 years of age and older. The mission statement is to improve the total well-being of Saskatchewan Seniors through participation in regular physical, cultural, social and intellectual activities. The province is divided into eight districts that promote active living, wellness and participation. Preeceville, Kamsack, Canora, Foam Lake, Yorkton, and Melville are all part of the Parkland Valley District, according to information provided by the SSFA.

District games are being held throughout the region for five-pin bowling, whist, golf, track and field, kaiser, cribbage, bank shuffleboard, pickleball and poetry/short story writing. Winners may advance to the provincial games in Moose Jaw, July 10-12, and then upon qualification, advance to the Canada 55-plus Games in New Brunswick, said the information.

Other activities at the provincial level include lawn bowling, contract and duplicate bridge, slo-pitch, 8-ball pool, swimming, tennis, bocce, and scrabble. Because there are no district competitions in these events, those interested may register in the provincials directly. All competitors must be 55 years of age or older.
