The 14U Bongo Volleyball team has finished their season with a bronze medal in division 1 at provincials in Warman, SK.

The team was seeded first going into the tournament, and finished the round robin in first place. The semi-final was against the Battleford Volleyball Club Power and Yorkton’s team narrowly lost in the third set. They came back in the bronze medal match against the Regina Volleyball Club, winning in straight sets.

The team had won gold in previous tournaments in the year and Coach Brandon Needham said that gave them confidence going into the Warman tournament.

“Our expectations were high. We certainly wanted to go to the tournament and have a good showing.â€

One of the challenges in Warman was the venue, said Needham. The team had been used to playing in gymnasiums, while this tournament was held in a large soccer centre, something the team took time getting used to.

Overall, it was an exceptional season, with several gold medals at the tournament level as well as the bronze in the provincial tournament. Needham said the season was especially remarkable considering the inexperience of the team overall.

“The nine players we had commit to our club hadn’t played any type of competitive volleyball other than their elementary school teams.â€

The 14U club’s season points to good things for the Yorkton Bongo Volleyball Club, and Needham is excited to see where the athletes on this team are headed.

“We are really looking forward to these athletes being in our club program. They have a very bright future indeed.â€
