More than a month without a leisure services director, Canora town council agreed during the November 17 meeting to continue the advertising process.

Six applications came in as result of the first round of advertising. Council selected three of the applicants for interviews, said Michael Mykytyshyn, chief administrative officer. One candidate was deemed suitable and a job offer was made. The candidate refused the offer.

It seems there are a number of similar-sized communities which are searching for leisure service or recreation directors at the moment, he said. It was council’s decision to just keep running the advertisement until a suitable candidate is hired.

In the meantime, the director’s portfolio workload is being shared among several members in the town office, said Mykytyshyn.

During the November 3 meeting, council authorized Robert Taylor, a labourer, to attend the Red Cross first aid training which was held November 4 and 5 at Parkland College in Canora.

Council approved a request from the Canora Flames recreational hockey team to rent a private locker room at the Canora Civic Centre until the 2017-2018 season.

Town council gave its formal approval for the Saskatchewan Snowmobile Association Inc. (SSA) and its members, under the supervision of Trakkers Snow Club, to enter and use NW and NE 16-32-3 W2 in RM of Keys (land on which the town’s water wells are located north of Canora) and NW and SW 25-30-4 W2 (west side of Canora where the trail comes into Canora) for the purpose of snowmobiling from November 1 to October 31, 2016.

Randy Molyneaux, the Emergency Measures Organization (EMO) co-ordinator, was authorized to attend the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) management course to be held December 9 and 10 in Wadena.

Council agreed to make application to the Local Government Committee for permission to borrow $532,000, repayable over a period of four years, for the purpose of financing a portion of the 2015 paving project. The debt will be repayable in four installments of $133,000 in the years 2016 to 2019 inclusive.
