The new council of Sturgis has held its first meeting.

STURGIS - The Town of Sturgis welcomed its new council when they took their Oath to Office at its first meeting held at the Sturgis Town Administrative building on November 21. Members of the new council are Dean Harris, mayor, and councillors, Michael Yaremchuk, Carol Smith, Tecia Fincaryk, Jeff Chupik, Nathan Seghers and Perry Keller.

Dean Harris was re-elected as mayor and says he is excited to have the opportunity to continue with the long-term projects that were started prior to the election.

“The new council is young and very excited to be involved in the community and see new projects and ideas take shape all for the growth in the community. We would like to address the housing issues, through new housing for seniors and possibly for young families and addressing public safety by establishing and promoting a speed limit on all streets, highways going through the town and the school zone. We are also excited for the new Gateway Co-op  food store that has been in the planning stage for 4 years and is being built on the outskirts of the community but it does create a problem in the downtown core of having another empty building. We are working on addressing that issues and are hopeful that we can encourage new businesses to setup in the Town. Other issues we are working on is getting the community hall more utilized and positive steps being taken to save our landfill,” said Harris.
