There are 13 newly certified babysitters in Canora thanks to a the annual course offered by the Canora Wheatland Lioness Club.

Thirteen candidates registered and completed the six-week training development, which began October 20 and concluded with the examination and presentation of certificates on November 24, said Shawna Leson of the Lioness Club.

聽To take part in the program an application process requires students to have a written letter of reference recommending them for the class.

Course leaders Lioness Shawna Leson and Lioness Sharon Ciesielski facilitated the six-week course and were assisted by community members educated in each particular field.

The first session, taught by Leson, covered 鈥渂abysitting basics.鈥 The remaining lessons were provided through presentations made by the following volunteers: Kelly Strelioff (child care I and II), Sherise Fountain (safety smarts and handling emergencies), Neal Reine (first aid), and Chris Danyluk (playing with children).

Throughout the training course and in order to receive certification, the students must complete a variety of assignments including the creation of a babysitter鈥檚 kit, caring for a fragile egg for one week, and providing a resume. They must also maintain perfect attendance, pass the written examination and successfully complete a practical assignment which again requires the assistance of a community family.聽

The Canora Wheatland Lioness members are extremely appreciative and would like to acknowledge the participation and community support received while preparing the recruitment of babysitters each year. With this support, each student has received his or her certificate and is enthusiastically prepared to babysit, said Leson.
