Sturgis SWF branch pays tribute to best hunters and fishers

The Sturgis branch of the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation (SWF) honoured avid hunters and fishers at the annual banquet and trophy night on April 14 at the Sturgis Community Hall.

Rob Wilcott, president, acknowledged executive members and spoke briefly on the club’s accomplishments throughout the year.

Ron Waugh, conservation officer from the Preeceville branch of the Saskatchewan Conservation office, attended.

There were bucket raffles, games and silent auction items won throughout the evening.

Jim Prekaski won the men's best northern pike award for his entry that weighed 16.5 pounds.

Amanda Masley won the women's best northern pike for her entry that weighed 15.5 pounds.

Brian Masley won the men's best walleye award for his entry that weighed 8.4 pounds.

Shae Peterson won the junior boy's best walleye that weighed 8 pounds. Peterson also won the best archery elk cow award.

Brynn Babiuk won the junior women's best walleye for her entry that weighed 10 pounds. Babiuk also won the youth women's best northern pike, 14.8 pounds, and junior women's typical white tail deer, 141 and 6/8 inches.

Kaiden Masley won the youth boy's best northern pike for his entry, 15.10 pounds. Masley also won the junior men's typical white-tailed deer award for his entry, 155 and 2/8 inches.

Cole Masley won the youth boy's best perch for his entry that weighed, 1.2 pounds.

Mason Babiuk was awarded the youth boy's best small mouth bass for a fish that weighed three pounds.

Andrew Chupik was presented the bear award for his entry that scored 18 and 4/16 inches. Chupik also won the best non-typical white-tailed deer award for his entry that measured 186 and 7/8 inches.

Russell Walker won the best typical mule deer for his entry that scored 167 inches even.

Dena Morrow won the women's best typical mule deer award for an entry that scored 179 and 1/8 inches.

Blair Mitchell won the best moose award for his entry of 170 and 1/8 inches.

Jakob Turchinetz won the junior men's moose award for his entry at 128 inches even. Turchinetz also won the junior men's pronghorn antelope award for his entry that scored 76 and 2/6 inches and best junior elk that scored 239 and 2/8 inches.

Lisa Neilson won the best elk award for her entry that scored 285 and 2/8 inches.

Brad Cameron won the best archery typical white-tailed deer award for his entry of 128 and 6/8 inches.

Dave Bodnarek won the men's typical white-tailed deer award for his entry of 158 and 7/8 inches.

Rachel Lozinski won the women’s typical white-tailed deer award for her entry of 136 and 2/8 inches.

Carter Masley won the junior men's Canada goose award for his entry that weighed 12.5 pounds.

Harold Barillo won the best mallard duck award for his entry that weighed 3.56 pounds.

The supper menu for the evening included: smoked turkey, pork loin, beef roast, sweet-and-sour venison meatballs, perogies, mashed potatoes, cabbage rolls, salads, and skor and blueberry trifle. Irene's catering was responsible for preparing the meal.

A dance concluded the evening with the James Williams Band providing the entertainment.

Members of the 2018 SWF branch executive committee include: Rob Wilcott, president; Allen Carlson, vice-president and membership chairperson; Daniel Wasylenchuk, secretary-treasurer; Kelly Masley, awards chair; Shirley Barsby and Russell Walker, fundraising chairs.

Directors are Tom Babchishin, Mervin Blender, Terry Hancock, Brent Strand, Bert Suknasky, Chris Walker, Myles Zawislak and Clint Zubko.
